My name is Carlyn Welch and I am so glad to be joining the Morning Star community this year as the kindergarten teacher. I am entering my fifth year of teaching, all of which have been in grades K-2. My husband and I (and our three furry children) live in Bend and take full advantage of our beautiful area. You can usually find us hiking, camping, snowboarding, paddle boarding or just soaking up the sunshine!
I am a lifelong learner and desire to foster that same passion in all of my students. I have a BA in Child and Adolescent Development with a focus on school-age children and families, which has greatly benefited my ability to educate the whole child. I am currently earning a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration is reading intervention. I am excited every year to share my love of learning with young minds and introduce them to new concepts and ideas through engaging and exciting experiences.
Education is my greatest passion and includes working with local governments and communities to create educational opportunities for children in rural areas of East Africa. I’ve spent the past nine years building schools and developing educational programs in northern Tanzania, working both remotely and in-country. I developed and funded Kitwe Secondary School in 2012 and it is now educating more than 300 students and providing full-time housing for 65 girls. It is amazing how the power of education can change lives, expand opportunities, and bring entire communities out of poverty.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions. I’m looking forward to working with you all this year!
