DECEMBER 19, 2017

Many of the 2nd through 5th grade students having been reading biographies this month and have shared about them with their classes.  I am enjoying the enthusiasm of the students as they tell about what they have read.  Also, I am seeing the students growing in their interest in history, as a result.

NOVEMBER 16, 2017

Our Scholastic Book Fair was quite a success.  It is fun to see the students being so excited about getting new books, and I will enjoy using the Scholastic Dollars that we earned to buy new books for the library.

For our reading incentive this month, the students are being encouraged to read historical fiction or mystery books.  Students are reading and sharing about many interesting books.

OCTOBER 24, 2017

The Scholastic Book Fair will be set up at school on Monday, November 6, through Monday, November 13.  The Book Fair will be open before and after school and during Parent/Teacher Conferences.  This is a good time to look for books as possible Christmas presents.  A percentage of the money spent at the Book Fair is given by Scholastic to buy books for our library.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2017

In the last few weeks, we have gotten some excellent new books and many good-quality used books for the library.  It is great to see the students’ enthusiasm about checking out these books.

We plan to start a school reading incentive program, beginning October 2.  Students will be encouraged to read books of various genres and to present reviews of the books they read.

I am looking forward to seeing the preschool through 5th grade students in the library and to guiding them to become more enthusiastic readers.  I expect this to be a great year of growth for all.

I would like to remind you to encourage your children to continue reading consistently throughout the summer.  You may find the following suggestions helpful in making your child’s summer reading more effective and enjoyable:

  • Help your child choose good-fit books—books that match your child’s reading level and interests.
  • Try to set a consistent reading schedule of at least 20 minutes per day.
  • Make reading a social activity with discussions and activities.

You might wish to get your child involved in a summer reading program.  A couple of suggestions are the programs available through the public library and through Barnes and Noble.

Continuing to read through the summer will help your child maintain the skills he/she gained during the school year.
